APPLE HAS BEEN boasting that the iPhone 6 has quickly become its most popular smartphone yet, echoing similar claims from Samsung earlier this year when it bragged about bumper sales of its Galaxy S5.
Now that both are on the market, we've pitted the smartphones head to head to see which of the high-end devices comes out on top.
Design
The iPhone 6 and Galaxy S5 feature similar price tags, but Apple's offering feels more expensive than Samsung's.
The iPhone 6 is crafted from aluminium, which gives it an all-round high-end feel, added to by the glass screen which integrates seamlessly into the phone’s casing.
The Galaxy S5, on the other hand, features a predominantly plastic casing. While this doesn't feel cheap, thanks to its perforated rear which adds a level of grip to the handset, it doesn't feel as high-end as its Apple rival.
iPhone 6 vs Galaxy S5 design
The Galaxy S5 may win over the accident prone, however, as it's the first Samsung phone to come with IP67 certification, making it resistant to dust and water. The Samsung smartphone also comes with a built-in heart rate sensor, unlike the iPhone 6, but both come with a fingerprint sensor.
In terms of size, the iPhone 6 is the skinnier of the two and, at 6.9mm thick, is the thinnest iPhone yet. The Galaxy S5 is 8.1mm thick.
Winner: iPhone 6
Display
The iPhone 6 touts a 4.7in, 1,334x750 Retina HD display with a pixel density of 326ppi, while the Galaxy S5 features a 5.1in, 1,080x1920 resolution display at 432ppi.
On paper the Galaxy S5's screen sounds like it should be the better of the two, but it's near impossible to notice any difference in sharpness between the two screens, despite the Samsung smartphone's higher pixel count, with both screens excelling when it comes to sharpness and clarity.
Samsung and Apple use different screen technologies, too. The iPhone 6 comes with an LED-backlit IPS LCD display, while the Galaxy S5 comes with a Super AMOLED screen.
iPhone 6 vs Galaxy S5 screen
Despite the Galaxy S5's higher resolution, we found the Super AMOLED technology on the smartphone often made colours appear somewhat oversaturated, and while it offers up deep blacks and vibrancy, images didn't appear as natural as they did on the iPhone's Retina HD screen. We also found the IPS LCD screen technology made for better viewing angles, although it was close to call.
We also found the iPhone 6's display easier to use with one hand, with the display measuring in at 0.4in smaller than that on the Galaxy S5.
Winner: iPhone 6
